History

The present owners are Tony Camacho and Helen Kingston. Miguel Sousa, the Manager, is responsible for the smooth running of day-to-day operations and all the team are here to ensure you have a pleasant and memorable stay. Tony and Helen are also the Executive Chefs and are usually to be found in the kitchen.

Vila Camacho was first converted to a hotel in 1963 by Mrs Isabel Camacho and has been extended to its current size several times since. We are the third generation of the Camacho family involved in managing the business. Some of our very first customers from the winter season 1963 are still coming back to us every two years. Although we are constantly renovating the property, we still aspire to the original values of the business – clean rooms, friendly, discreet service, good food and traditional Madeiran hospitality.

Most of our rooms are relatively small, but we do have some large family-sized rooms and a lovely suite. The rooms are quite basic in that they do not have TV's, mini-bars or kettles. However, all rooms have private bathrooms with plenty of hot water and fresh towels and daily maid service. The rooms are simply and brightly decorated with wooden floors and many feature original art. Our Reception and/or adjacent bar are manned 24 hours a day. The property also benefits from a TV bar area with satellite channels, a WI-FI zone, a small pool, a pretty garden terrace where meals and drinks can be taken and a small spa/massage facility, as well a sun terrace.

Our restaurant and bar, The Flame Tree, combines bold, modern Madeiran cuisine with traditional service. All meals, including breakfast, are waiter-served. We have an à la carte menu, which changes seasonally, and is available at lunchtime and in the evening from 6pm. We also serve sandwiches and bar snacks all day long.

Please note that being an older, non-purpose-built property, we do not have a lift and there are steps up to the entrance of the property from the main road, which means that we are not a good choice for customers with walking or mobility difficulties.
